added you as a friend on Miami Honda Community"
The Miami Honda Community social network "friend request" below is an
example of a Spammer strategy and the technique applied to create and
build up a new approach that has ensnared a surprisingly large number
of people... Social Spam.
Social Spam is based on sheer volume of people recruited to join as
many social media UGC sites as possible. Once in, these virtual slaves
are told to "friend" as manu members of the targeted social network as
fast as possible. After they have a large enough List of Friends, the
social spammer slaves are given various pharmaceutical blog articles
to post... And then send to their friends repeatedly. The Social
Spammer Slaves are instructed to avoid friending any community admins,
and will even ignore or decline friend requests sent to them by
community admins... While insatiably seeking friends from the ranks of
new members and those obviously not likely to excommunicate them from
the social network they are building their nefarious Social Spam
database from
Social Spammers also use community messaging systems to try and
harvest as many legitimate email addresses as possible... The
unsuspecting social citizen who responds the message shown below will
have his email address loaded onto a "Bot Network" of zombie computers
taken over by criminal spammers who will solicit all manner of
trickery from him.
What can be done?
Social Network administrators should "ban", "suspend" or somehow fire
the spammer's social media account.
Often times these crafty spam vermin wil only "Friend" non-admin
members of a social network, so their "All Friends" messages escape
the watchful eyes of the Admins. For this reason it is imperative that
each community member forward suspicious messages or otherwise alert a
social network administrator that a rat has gotten into your social
clubhouse.
Social Spammers erode the value of each community by driving existing
members to shut off their email alerts, posting sleezy blogs filled
with prescription meds, messaging members and various porn offerings.
In some cases the Social Spammers drive away the community's top 5% of
content contributors, who contribute 80% of the social network's most
valuable User Generated Content. And content creation is the life
blood of social networks and online communities.
